Anthem 5K Race Report

First and foremost, I finished! And I ran the entire race, no walking or stopping! Thank you, God!

The day did not start off entirely as planned. Traffic trying to get to the race was horrific. Trying to get 6,000 participants into a business park did not go very well. We left at 6:45 and got to the starting line at 7:50. It was supposed to take 35 minutes to get there. Once we parked the car, we had to walk .8 miles to the starting line. Then they started the race a half an hour late to wait for those who were in traffic and some people still didn't make it.

Once we started running I got really excited. They didn't have the runners/walkers separated so it was hard to pass all the walkers as I was going. I felt like it slowed me down trying to maneuver around them especially on such narrow roads. People started running on the other side of the road since it was so crowded and there were semis coming down their side of the road right next to them. It was kind of crazy.

Getting to the 1st mile marker felt so good and I had tears in my eyes. Then we got to the 2nd mile marker and I knew I was going to finish. It was so encouraging seeing all the other participants. One guy was on crutches. I can't imagine going on crutches for 3.1 miles.

The last .3 miles or so were tough only because there were so many people walking to the finish line and it was nearly impossible to get by them. There were a lot of people sprinting and then walking then sprinting again because we passed each other a few times. Maybe by the time they got to the end they couldn't run any farther?

Crossing the finish line was such an amazing feeling!!!! I don't even know how to describe it.

I stopped my watch and checked the time. My goal was under 40. The watch showed 40:08. (The official time is 40:06.) I was so disappointed and thought I could have pushed myself harder to meet my goal. Then I looked at it again and saw that I actually ran 3.16 miles. That may not seem like much of a difference, but  if you take away the .05 extra, I would have met my goal. So let's call it a win.

Lucas snapped a photo for me afterwards.

After I rested a few minutes we made the long trek back to the car. Another .8 miles. Thank you all for your encouragement and support and for reading. I think there are more 5K races in my future.

Now on to the 10K in 2 weeks. 2 WEEKS?!?!?!
